Caetano Veloso's famous lyrics, "the only ones not dancing behind the trio eletrico are thouse who are already dead" are reaffirmed with each new carnival. During summer time from December to March, Salvador literally explodes. Most of the music comes from organized cultural groups, who work in the community that spawned them. They have their own clubhouse and an afoxe' -the Afro-bloco. In the week leading up Carnival, their afoxe' have public rehearsals around the clubhouses. For the rest of the year the clubhouse are used as bars and meeting places with music at the weekends.

Salvador da Bahia has the biggest street party in the world for three reasons:

1- In February it is hot. While the western countries are freezing, Brazil, between the tropic of Capricorn and the Equator, is kissed by a terrific sun and wet by a worm ocean.

2- Some thousands of Africans, representing "par excellence" the musical rhythm on earth, suddenly found themselves on the other side of the Atlantic and most of them right in Salvador da Bahia!!!

3- The greed of the international banks, institutionalized corruption and the reluctance of the middle class to do anything that might jeopardize its comfortable lifestyle maintain alive extreme differences creating the spirit of the Afro-Brazilian carnival: the carnival as the full of joy metaphysic revenge for the sorrow in the world...

Carnival has its origins in various pagan spring festivals. During the middle ages not even the heavy hand of the inquisition could squelch Carnival in the Portuguese colony, where it came to acquire African rhythms. Whilst in Rio de Janeiro everything happens indoor Salvador has resisted commercialization so that it is a street event of mass participation. The principal point of activity is around Praca Castro Alves while Pelourinho is more for family and Ondina is more for upper class and tourists with of course some lack of energy. Porto da Barra is getting more and more popular specially because it offers wide space to enjoy along its beaches. Officially the Carnival lasts five days from the Friday to the Tuesday preceding Ash Wednesday but from December onwards Carnival groups hold public rehearsals all over the city.

The essential elements of Carnival are:

1- Afro-bloco. As percussion is the traditional heart of every religious African rituals, Bahia's drum troupes have made an orchestra out of drums so that the roots of Carnival started around them. The Most famous Afro-Brazilian percussion group are Filhos de Gandhi and Olodum who have invented samba-reggae.

2- Trio eletrico. As a joke in the 50s, Dodo' Armandinho and Osmar got on the top of a truck and played frevo with electric guitar; Today the trucks are piled high with speakers, lots of musicians on top, drive through the city and surrounded by dancing people (mobs).

3- Camarote. It is a private party area from which you can watch the trio eletrico passing by. There are several kind of camarote, for family or to enjoy a party into a party where nobody go home alone... You know it makes sense...

4- Pipoca. There are two kind of "massa-danza". The rich, of course, who pay to stay around the trio eletrico surrounded by many men holding a strong rope in order to protect the rich from the pipoca that is the poorest. The pipoca is the real heart of every dionysian event, always dancing and fighting each other and against the bloco of the rich untill the police arrive...

One thing is very important to say about carnival: black blocos may be black culture groups who won't appreciate being joined by non-black people so watch out where you are dancing...
